How to Use Torch Paste with Ikonart Stencils

Here’s a step-by-step guide to using Torch Paste with your Ikonart stencils for a flawless wood-burning experience:

  1. Prep Your Surface: If you’re using Torch Paste on wood, start by sanding your surface with 220 grit sandpaper. This will ensure a smooth surface for better stencil adhesion and a cleaner burn.

  2. Apply Your Stencil: Place your Ikonart stencil on the prepared surface. Make sure to rub down well to ensure it adheres properly, preventing any bleeding of the paste.

  3. Apply Torch Paste: Apply a thin layer of Torch Paste using a squeegee, pressing it through all mesh openings of the stencil. After applying, scrape off any excess paste and return it to the jar.

  4. Let the Paste Dry: Carefully remove the stencil and let the Torch Paste absorb and dry on the surface for at least two minutes. This step is crucial for achieving a clean burn.

  5. Wood Burning Process: Using a high-powered heat gun (we recommend 1000W or higher), move the heat continuously over the design until the pattern begins to burn. The longer you apply heat, the darker the burn will become.

  6. Final Touches: After the entire design is burned, wipe the surface to remove any debris. Depending on your project, you can finish with a stain or sealer, or leave it natural for a rustic look.
